Balos Beach is one of the most impressive and photographed destinations in Crete – and for good reason. It is located on the northwestern tip of Chania prefecture, in the area of Cape Gramvousa, and is famous for its turquoise waters, white sand and exotic Caribbean-like scenery.
A Landscape of Unique Beauty
The beach forms a lagoon, with shallow, warm waters that take on impressive shades of turquoise and blue. The sand is white and pink, thanks to crushed shells, while the landscape is surrounded by wild rocks and a view of the small island of Imeri Gramvousa with the Venetian castle on top.
Access
There are two ways to reach Balos:
By car and hiking: Drive to the parking lot and then descend (about 20-30 minutes) a path with panoramic views of the lagoon.
By boat: From the port of Kissamos, daily boat trips stop at both Balos and Gramvousa
Visitor Tips
Prefer the morning hours or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
Bring a hat, water and sunscreen with you, as there is no natural shade
There are no organized infrastructures on the beach, so prepare yourself appropriately (although there is a beach canteen operating on some days).
Hiking access rewards you with the most impressive view of Balos from above – ideal for photos!..
